
Apply For A Horsemanship or Young Horse Rescue Grant
As a nonprofit private foundation (501(c)(3) awarding grants to individuals, the grant process must be approved in advance by the IRS and is awarded on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis. Grants are made based on available funding.
Process:
Application and Screening of application - Application is reviewed for completeness and minimum standard responses. If application is incomplete or does not meet minimum requirements, no further steps will be taken.
Complete applications that meet minimum requirements are scored based on application matrix and ranked.
Applicants are referred for interview by ranked order; the number of applicants referred for interview is the number of available grants plus ten. The AMHS will schedule phone call or in person interview with applicants, and score the interview based on interview matrix. Grants will be offered in order of interview ranking. Grants may be denied solely at the discretion of AHMS.
Grantee selects a horse from the track or a kill pen or adopts from ASPCA or approved rescue, and purchase is approved by AHMS based on stated goals of the approved application.
The grant pays FMV up to $2500 to purchase/adopt the horse being rescued and FMV for shipping to the new owner’s barn, depending on mileage.
The grant will reimburse expenses up to $300 per month for up to a year to assist with board, vet, training support, or other rehab care; verification required to be submitted. The remainder of the expenses for board/ care/ training are the responsibility of the grantee. Animals under four years of age are eligible to a separate grant structure (Young Horse Rescue Grant) with a feed and care stipend of up to $300 per month until age four.
Monthly updates and a short video clip from the grantee on the health and training of the horse are required each month, as long as the grantee has the horse; updates are shareable to the foundation for learning, teaching, and for transparency on use of the funding.
The horse can be sold/ rehomed by the grantee at any time, before or after the year is up. Grantee must notify AHMS within 24 hours of sale. Grant terminates upon sale/rehoming of the horse or one year, whichever occurs first in time.
